The MFC offers several tutoring/mentoring programs for adolescents experiencing learning difficulties.

Success and Independent Learning (SAIL)

This educational therapy program provides a safe, supportive environment for children and young adults who are experiencing academic difficulty. A personalized learning profile and educational plan is developed for each student. The SAIL approach goes beyond traditional tutoring, improving students’ thinking skills and teaching them “how to learn,” rather than just treating symptoms. After school and flexible hours can be arranged.

Taylor Adolescent Program (TAP)

The Taylor Adolescent Program is an after-school program for students in grades 5 to 11 who have:

  • a diagnosed learning disorder
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
  • mild Autism Spectrum Disorder

Program staff includes a school psychologist, social worker, speech-language pathologist and learning specialists.

The program model

Students are interviewed and matched with a tutor-mentor — an undergraduate or graduate student trained to work with adolescents experiencing academic difficulty. Tutor-mentors model and teach strategies for successful learning, then scaffold their student until he/she can independently use the strategies. Strategies supporting successful learning include

  • reading comprehension practice
  • essay- or story-writing
  • planning
  • studying
  • managing attention and distractibility
  • completing math words problems, among others

Students also learn to advocate for themselves and those who struggle with social situations may also benefit from TAP.

Students attend sessions twice a week for a total of four hours of support. Homework and learning experiences are used to develop self-awareness and strategies. A snack and social time provides opportunities to address difficulties with social interactions.

Bursaries are available.
