Success and Independent Learning (SAIL)

This educational therapy program provides a safe, supportive environment for children and young adults who are experiencing academic difficulty. A personalized learning profile and educational plan is developed for each student. Collaboration with parents and schools helps students develop and use effective learning strategies faster. Areas addressed by educational therapy:

Academic

  • Reading, writing, math, spelling
  • Study skills
  • Critical-thinking skills

Nonacademic

  • Organization
  • Problem-solving
  • Attention

Awareness of strengths and challenges

  • Self-esteem
  • Self-advocacy
  • Motivation

Socio-emotional

  • Relationship between emotions, behaviour and learning
  • Providing a safe place to express feelings that affect learning

The learning coach models and teaches cognitive learning strategies that:

  • are effective and efficient approaches to learning
  • focus on how rather than what
  • provide a structured learning environment
  • use systematic steps
  • are transferable to classroom learning and assignments
  • are essential to some but good for all

In addition, the learning helps students break down tasks and scaffolds learning until students can use this systematic approach independently. Self-awareness and task monitoring is developed through schoolwork and reflection on learning experiences.

Taylor Adolescent Program (TAP)

The Taylor Adolescent Program is an after-school program for students in grades 5 to 11 who have:

  • a diagnosed learning disorder
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
  • mild Autism Spectrum Disorder

Program staff includes a school psychologist, social worker, speech-language pathologist and learning specialists.

How the program works

Students are interviewed and matched with a tutor-mentor — an undergraduate or graduate student trained to work with adolescents experiencing academic difficulty. Tutor-mentors model and teach strategies for successful learning, then scaffold the student until he or she can independently use the strategies. Strategies supporting successful learning include:

  • reading comprehension practice
  • essay- or story-writing
  • planning
  • studying
  • managing attention and distractibility
  • completing math words problems, among others

Students also learn to advocate for themselves. Those who struggle with social situations may also benefit from TAP.

Students attend sessions twice a week for a total of four hours of support. Homework and learning experiences are used to develop self-awareness and strategies. A snack and social time provides opportunities to address difficulties with social interactions.

Bursaries are available.
